As recorded in the dedication service for Good Shepherd:
“On Epiphany of 1965, the Florida-Georgia District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod commissioned Reverend Hugo Paul Esala as missionary-at-large to serve the North Fort Myers and Cape Coral area of Florida. One hundred nineteen people attended the first worship service conducted in a dwelling (then) occupied by the Tropic Club in Tropic Isles on January 17….” A Sunday School had been meeting there, and in conjunction with members of St. Michael’s Lutheran of Fort Myers. The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd was organized thusly on the fourteenth day of March in 1965. Pastor Esala the founding pastor was installed on May 23 that year. The congregation charter was closed at the end of the year with 76 communicants and 39 children.
The decision in time was made to carry out a building program. Land was purchased. A series of building projects over the years took place. A school was formed soon after. Over the years, Good Shepherd was blessed with several men of God who served here as called pastors for the Good Shepherd’s flock, as well as the blessing of principals and teachers and directors and other staff. Our school also by the grace of God has grown and over the years been a source for the church and our families and the surrounding community to raise our children in the knowledge of the Lord and a quality Christian education.
Today, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and School continues by grace to serve our Savior, proclaiming the Good News of salvation to our members, the community, and in this age to the ends of the earth via even mass media like the internet. Some 55 years after our founding, we rejoice in the continued grace and mercy of our loving Savior Jesus Christ who is with us always, even to the end of the ages. And we recently just launched the formation of a taskforce for work toward prayerfully establishing the new Vision for the work of the Great Commission of our Lord and Savior here in North Fort Myers, Florida, after the work of an extensive study. We have been served by pastors Esala, Renner, Martin, Alexander, Lawson, and now pastor Davis.
